Hello, Immortals! It’s Ally here (and other… people) with our first group post ever! My chosen colour for these kinda posts is red! Yay! Firre! Pew pew! As this is a new initiative, we would greatly appreciate all feedback that would help us make these monthly chats better!
Haha, calm down, Ally. Hello, and this is Melia! I will be writing in purple for our group posts. Every month, we will be choosing a book to read and review together for the (ImmortalReads Club?) (We can change this name!). At the end of each book club post, we will announce the next month’s book which you can read along with us and join the discussion in the comments! YAYYYYYYYY!!!! 🙂
Hi! This is Laurena, and my colour is a tealy blue (green? Aqua?) Dunno, but I think it’s pretty. Ally and Melia said it all. Yep! 🙂 But I get to start the actual discussion! Fangirl! Woo! Cather and Wren and Levi… Levi. Levi, Levi, Levi!
Alright! Time for discussion!! I’ll kick the critique off by saying I loved reading Fangirl. The romance, plot and witty banter was perfectly balanced. However, (*organ sounds*) I was not a huge fan of Cather’s voice as a protoganist. Her view on life was stubborn and so frustrating to the point where I almost gave up (almost) but then I met Levi. He is, in long form, (and I don’t say this often) one of the most well developed male characters I have ever seen. I mean, look at this angel!
“That’s not the point,” he said. “What kind of creep would I be if I let my girl carry something heavy while I walked along, swinging my arms?”
Your girl? “The kind that respects my wishes,” she said. “And my strength, and my… arms.”
Levi grinned some more. Because he wasn’t taking her seriously. “I have a lot of respect for your arms. I like how they’re attached to the rest of you.”
I decree it to be scientifically proven that Levi is an angel, and should therefore be praised. Melia, any thoughts?
I really liked Cath at the beginning of the novel and I related to her a lot, but then, like Ally said she became too stubborn and developed an irritating manner. That would have brought down my rating further if it wasn’t for Levi. Levi was just one of those characters that win you over as soon as you meet them. For me, that doesn’t happen often. Never mind, it happens more than I like to admit. I probably get attached too easily. And a lot of the time that doesn’t end well for me. Anyway, what did you think about the characters, Laurena?
Cather… I have mixed feeling about her. At the beginning, she was awesome and strong and then… she becomes weak and she gives up far too easily. But I think she redeemed herself eventually.
I loved how Fangirl was able to address mental illness without making it the center of attention at all times. While mental illness can sometimes occupy your whole life until you recover or learn to deal with it, it’s not always like that. Sometimes, it’s completely unnoticeable next to everyone around you or, even, yourself. This book didn’t turn the mental illness aspect into a massive drama which is one of the main things that I loved about Fangirl.
YESSS!!! I completely forgot about that! At the same time, I really liked the way she slowly worked through her social anxiety and how Levi helped her through that, but didn’t cure her immediately. In so many books (more than I am bothered to count :D), the boyfriend magically cures the protagonist’s aliment.
Yeah, that gets annoying and it is not how it happens in real life.
Exactly! Whereas in Fangirl, it is constantly portrayed as a daily struggle for Cath.
We really enjoyed reading fangirl and recommend it for 14+ as there is mild sexual content and coarse language.
Join us next month reading The Intuitives which we received kindly from Trash Dogs Media LLC (Seriously, they are AMAZING!).
We hope you will enjoy this new initiative of ours. Please let us know in the comments what you think and if there are any issues with this/ suggestions.

PS. You gonna help me with Ally and Melia? (The correct answer is yes. And whats with blaming Dani for everything on this blog?)

Of course I will! But we blame Dani? No. That never happens! And we both know it’s going to be really hard to get Ally and Melia to read FMA or Manga…
